Finally, the Y-Con recap
Sep. 5th, 2001 06:42 pmI'm finally going to write this, after putting it off for the past day or two. In short, the trip kicked ass. We all had a great time together, and we got to enjoy the con, go crazy in the dealer room, and trot around Japantown and the rest of San Fran like the silly fangirls we are. I'm very happy I went, because it was worth it.
Bossness and I had a hell of a time getting going on Friday morning, although that was mostly my fault because I'm a scatterbrain. I almost forgot my checkbook AND the key to the locking gas cap. ^^;; But we got out around 12:30 or 1-ish anyway.
Anyways, we were on the road until probably 9:00ish, and good god, was it a boring drive. There was SO MUCH FARMLAND. You'd have thought we were driving through Iowa with all the farmland that was around. The good part of the drive was Boss-chan's j-rock CDs ahoy that kept us occupied.
We got to the hotel at 9:00 or so, and checked in and hauled our crap upstairs, and did our con check-in too. We found Maya downstairs pretty easily (or I should say, she found *us* pretty easily) and we shoved off for the airport after that. Once at the airport, we were walking around trying to find Kyuu, cos her plane had already landed, and we were retarded and couldn't figure out that we were actually standing RIGHT BY HER. ::alfkahsfkaslasflh:: She actually had to call my cell and be like "hey, are you the girl that I'm staring at over by the screen thingy?" It was pretty funny. Let us never speak of it again. ::rotfl:: Anyways we stood around at the gate until Alyson got there, and then we went back and dropped off all our crap.
We went to dinner at the Denny's (DENIIIZU!) up the street from the hotel because I was all "food food food feed me I'm going to eat my own arm" cos I hadn't eaten since like noon and it was past midnight by then. This was also by *far* the most non-ghetto Denny's I've ever been to. It had two floors, and everything was really clean and new and well-lit. Or at least, it was by comparison to your average Denny's. There was this wacky asian waitress chick that looked about as white trash as an asian lady can get, and she also reminded me of Susan from Survivor for no apparent reason. ::rotflol:: After that it was bedtime.
Saturday had me waking up at 7:30 even though we didn't get to sleep until like 3am, but there I was, ready and raring to go. Kyuu and Alyson trotted off early cos they still had to register, but the first thing we did was hit the dealer's room, and there were many fun things to buy! There wasn't any j-rock doujinshi to be found ;_; But I still found some cool stuff. The only bad thing was that my MOM showed up while I was in the dealer room, so I didn't end up getting much in the way of good doujinshi cos I had to go carry the random groceries that she'd brought me up to the room. x_x
Still, I got out of there with:
I gotta say, I *love* buying things. Acquisition of stuff is hella fun. When I become rich, I'm going to need the biggest house in the neighbourhood just to hold all my stuff. I'm not kidding.
Anyhoo, after I got done in the dealer room, we all went out to get lunch and shop around Japantown. We were joined by Iori, from the Pyromania board. I have no idea who found her, and she said like two words to me the whole weekend, so eh, don't ask me to explain.
So the cool thing about the hotel was it being smack in the middle of Japantown. There were stores and restaurants out the yang, and we got lunch at this one place in the restaurant mall. I had me some oyako donburi and it was berry nice! After that we went to a random CD shop, and then to Kinokuniya. While there I got a Weiss Kreuz artbooky thinger, the Luna Sea STYLE album (which Maya said was first press and actually kinda rare! :o) as well as CDs by Glay and Laputa.
After that was THE BEST PANEL EVER. It was called Girls Wanna Know, and it was basically a Q&A session about the logistics of gay sex, for fanfic writers and the like. These two gay guys and a bi guy led it and it was really, really fun. Mark my words, the best panels are led by the guys with the coolest pants. (Two of the guys had nifty shiny pants on, with cat ears and a tail! ::rotfl::) I gotta put up the pictures, they'll probably say far more about the panel than my words could. ;p
The J-rock discussion, uh, SUCKED. They spent like 30 seconds talking about Luna Sea and the rest of the *hour* was all about Malice Mizer and Gackt. What the fuh??? They didn't even have to really talk about LS necessarily... I would've been perfectly happy talking about Laruku, or Glay, or Laputa, or *anything* that DIDN'T have to do with goddamn Malice Mizer. I'm sorry, but there are actually quite a few people in this world who don't give two craps about MM or Gackt, so DIVERSIFY for chrissake. And jeez, we didn't even get to wax poetic about fun yaoi pairings in j-rock. If we wanted to talk about Malice Mizer cosplay then we would've gone to a COSPLAY DISCUSSION. We're at the Y-Con j-rock discussion because we want to talk about j-rock people *HUMPING EACH OTHER!* And the chick running it got snotty when me and the Slave contingent started getting bored. Pshaw. :p
The J-rock videos were a snore too. They played some of the lamest and least interesting videos I've ever seen for every band except Malice Mizer and X Japan. (although if they'd tried to screw with X Japan, there probably would've been blood on the walls by the end of the reel) So yeah, the Slaves got screwed as far as the J-rock stuff goes. End of story. :p </rant>
After that we got pizza, and watched a LOT of Queer as Folk. I am officially addicted to that show. It's really good. It would scare the crap out of James, but I thought it was a delightful romp. :D Brian Kinney is, indeed, God. I envy his skillz. And KATSUO! Katsuo was great! Kane ga iiii da yo!
Sunday was funny because we ended up going to Castro cos Alyson was all hyped about the gigantic lube aisle in the Walgreens up there that the Girls Wanna Know panelists mentioned. ::rotfl:: There weren't really any panels that we were especially interested in that day, since I slept through the Who's On Top? panel. :p So we stopped for some very tasty crepes and headed out there on the bus.
It's an interesting part of town, I'll tell you that. I think Maya might have gone to the same middle school as Shannon did too, cos we got off the bus to Castro right across from Maya's old middle school, and Shann's mentioned her school having "Castro" somewhere in the name... anyways. Castro was an interesting part of town. Lots of people walking around, plenty of shops, lots of people who appeared to be gay. I mainly just thought it was hilarious that we were even up there to start with, all because of the Legend of the Lube Aisle. ::adflkash::
On the ride back we had to go by Fisherman's Wharf and we passed by Maya's workplace (She works at a WAX MUSEUM! I'm sorry, but that just sounds cool to me! :p) and then we got on another bus where this homeless guy made us sit by his rank-ass beer cans that he was going to recycle. Eventually Alyson took it upon herself to start talking to him and screwing with him because he had this whole thing about "oh, I believe in hell, but you can still be reincarnated!" and contradictory crap like that. And then he said he was against perverted sex, and out came the Yaoi-Con badges. Sorry dude, but you don't talk about perverted sex being bad when you're surrounded by chicks attending a man-porn convention. ::adlsfkahsflka:: It was so, so funny.
When we got back to Japantown we went to the Japanese grocery store and we got POCKY! And I bought a bottle of Gogo no Kocha for James because it said "a natural gift of love" on it. ::lol:: Then we wandered around Japantown mall some more, eventually got dinner at Maya's favourite restaurant that she goes to every week, and along the way discovered the beauty ot Calpico Orange Soda. I MUST HAVE MORE.
Also, we stopped in at the Kinokuniya stationery store, and they had all kinds of cute things that I wanted to buy. I eventually found a TarePanda keychain where he's holding a BEER CAN! Well, it's probably meant to be something innocuous like a soda can, but *I* say it's beer. He's the Hitoshi Doi of the TarePanda universe! All he has to do is make a bunch of poorly designed shoujo anime pages and play baseball! ^_- Oh, and we watched pretty much all of Weiss Kreuz before going to bed, too. It's hilarious how poorly drawn some of the episodes are, and they need to burn that shirt Omi always wears in the second arc, because he looks like a total wanker in it.
The next morning we didn't get to do a lot. We finished the last ep of Weiss and one more ep of QAF because we could squeeze them in before check-out time, and then we crammed all 6 of us into the car, and stuffed the 6-dead-body trunk with everyone's luggage, plus all the stuff my ma brought up on Saturday, and I took everyone to the airport.
We must have stood there for like an hour taking pictures of each other in all possible groupings, and nobody really wanted to go home yet. It was really amazing how well everyone got along, especially since some of us didn't even really know each other at all prior to the con. Alyson was as fun as I remembered, and it was hella nice having Bossness along with me on the drive down. Kyuu was a total kick in the pants (everything's erotic! ^_-), and Maya was really nice and just *adorable*. (Maya brought each of a little Afro Ken or Kogepan gift on Friday night... whatta sweetie!) Eventually I finally realized that I should probably quit bogarting the curb at the airport and get home *before* 2am, so Bossness and I finally got into the car and took off for Eugene, and the rest of the girls hung out at SFO until their flights came in. ;_;
So yes, I'm very satisfied with my little vacation... it's the only one I get this summer, since I didn't go on the Alaska trip, so I'm really glad it went so well. And damnit, I miss everybody! They should all move here and entertain me EVERY DAY! ;_; But man, I hope everybody had as much fun as I did... it sounds like it from what I hear so far.
Anyways, I've been at work this whole time, and I'm gonna go home soon, since it's way past time.

Still, I got out of there with:
- a Heero/Duo doujinshi
- a Kurama/Hiei doujinshi
- a Treize/Wufei doujinshi (and by far the smuttiest one I got, I might add)
- a Chocobo plush (which was actually for James)
- and Weiss Kreuz BEER COASTERS!!
