On the run

Heh, it looks like the 30 Day Challenge bug is spreading. [livejournal.com profile] cmsunflash is starting one akin to what I did last month, and Boy declared after we got back from Birthday Happy Hour that he's not drinking for a month. I don't think he was even particularly aware that I was doing the 30-Day. And that doesn't even include the people I know who were already quitting smoking, quitting caffeine, exercising again...! It's so cool to see people making changes for the better. :)

Anyhoo, shooting the marathon was less painful than I expected. We were in the same shooting positions as the previous year, and even though they'd changed the course a bit this year, they gave us the same instructions. Things seemed off when we ended up waiting for a good hour longer than we expected, but we followed the directions, so we figured they'd just moved our location to later in the course.

So, imagine our surprise when the first place runner blasted by, coming from the other direction! Whoops. We caught the rest of the runners, but it threw us for a loop. Buggers! Hopefully they'll give us the *right* instructions next year. Jeeeeez.

The rest of the weekend was okay. Way more time in the car than I'd have liked, but we got a comped Chinese food dinner on Saturday, and Boy's folks fed us a nice lunch after we got done with the marathon on Sunday. I didn't even run *that* short on sleep, although the motel bed wasn't exactly the most comfortable.

I admit that shooting these marathons makes me think about doing one. I've never had much talent for running, though, and my body doesn't seem to take well to the extra impact. I think a half-marathon could be doable, though. I've only run 5 miles one time, and I was sore for a week afterwards, but even with my occasional tendinitis flare-ups and super-tight IT band, I think I could train up to squeezing out 13.1 miles. I'd consider a half-marathon to be a real accomplishment for somebody who's as bad at running as I am! ;)

So, I'm thinking on it... I suppose the real challenge is finding a half-marathon to run that I'm not already shooting. I'd want to do a bigger one, to get the full experience of the screaming spectators and all, but I tend to be on camera duty for those. We'll see, I guess...
Day 30! Oh, snap!

This has been an educational 30 days. I don't think I fully committed to eating well until maybe 10 days ago, but eh, it's a process. I did get fully on the wagon, and I feel fantastic right now. I hope it lasts. A few things I figured out:

--I may have progressed enough emotionally that I can do food logging again without getting obsessive and stressed out about it. (if I get past the 3 week mark without losing my mind, I'd say I'm there)
--After measuring out my shots at the party last weekend, I learned that I'd previously been drinking a *ton* more alcohol than I'd ever have guessed. Yipes! I don't do it often, but it was surprising to me nonetheless.
--Working out in the mornings is actually pretty nice, if I keep it short. (I still like my Zzz's)
--My body is both weaker and stronger than I'd allowed myself to believe. Weaker in a couple specific areas, but stronger because it can take more and do more than I thought I could. *Especially* when I eat and sleep well.
--To stay sane and healthy, I need to treat productivity and food the same way: do these things in moderation.

I'm really happy with how this has gone, and I'm glad I did this. I like the headspace I'm in, and if I keep feeling awesome, it should be way easier to make the changes stick this time around. W00t!

I can't believe the 30-Day is almost over! I do feel like this is starting to get easier, and I guess I sort of have another 30-Day to follow that up: keep doing the Shred DVD in the mornings (or a Jillian workout in the gym if I can't get it in the A.M.) Fortunately, I don't have to clog up your Friends Lists for that one. ;)

I tried the 30-Day Shred DVD this morning, and I'm happy with it thus far. I did Level 1 today, and it was definitely challenging and sweat-inducing! I especially noticed it in my upper body, and that's with wimpy girl-pushups instead of full pushups.

I have no idea how a person in worse shape than me would do with this, but the moves are simple and easy to grasp (srsly, everyone knows how to do a jumping jack!), so if you get tripped up on choreography during aerobics class, you'll feel much more comfy with this. I'll see what kind of results I get after a week or two of this. :)

I did the DVD this morning during what's usually my solo time, though, and I still got interrupted! XD Andy apparently had to get up super-early to take his car into the shop. That was a one-time thing, though, so hopefully it won't happen again.

On a related note, thanks in large part to [livejournal.com profile] phrassie, I've recently gained a certain interest in Jillian Michaels, a.k.a. the ass-kicking trainer on The Biggest Loser. I was meh towards the Tough Chick persona they give her on that show, but then I learned that she A) used to be fat, and B) found health through martial arts and dropped 50 lbs. I was all, "hey, I did that, too!" and decided to do a bit more digging. I've since found her talk radio podcasts, where they actually let her be a normal human being, and I liked them quite a bit.

So, I ordered her 30 Day Shred DVD, after reading a bunch of reviews about what a tough and time-efficient workout it was, and once it arrives, I'll give it 6 days a week for 30 days. I *love* a workout that can kick my butt in a short amount of time, so I figure I can commit for a month. If there's anything that will whip me into shape, it's 20 minutes a day of beatings, beatings, and more beatings. ;)

Looking ahead, I may have to give myself a pass for this Friday thru Sunday. Friday would absolutely be my pre-tournament recovery day, even if I weren't going to be in the van all day driving to the Bay. I'll be in the van all day on Sunday, too, so I probably won't be able to work out then. And, I'll be eating out the whole weekend. :/ I'll pack my muffins and some fruit to take along, but meals will be out of my hands.

So, goals for Days 12-14:

After I get back, I think I'm going to hit it harder! I've been leery of adding too much to my routine this late in the game, because I've overtrained in previous years, and basically destroyed my performance at the competition. But, post-tournament? All bets are off!
