Big Ideas

Well, not-so-big, really. I learned that the Faculty Instructional Technology facility at the library is looking for new staff, and they want the kind of experience that *I* have. AND they pay $0.50! more per hour than this job does. Oh, the temptation! ::dramatic pose::

The only semi-scary aspect is the entirely male staff. (one of whom happens to be my GTF for Tools 2. O_o;;) When you're a girl looking towards a male-dominated, technology-related position, that's always intimidating. BUT it could also be advantageous if they're feeling Affirmative Action-y. :D :D :D Okay, okay, so I pretty much hate the concept of Affirmative Action, but if it gets me a leg up on the competition, then who am I to complain? I know I'm good at what I do, so qualifications aren't at all a question.

I'm off to choir now. Yay for walking all the way to the music school. :pppp

So you're one of those... "I hate affirmative action unless it helps me out" people. Hmmmmmmmmm

ROTFL! Well, not exactly. I think it's a stupid concept in general, but then again so is the still-fairly-common practice of paying women less money than men for the same amount/quality of work. There's still a gender barrier out there, and it honestly saddens me to know that it takes one discriminatory practice to cancel another out.

But on the other hand, when I'm investigating a job and I see an all-male staff like that, it really cries out to my feminista side. ^_- That department is just *waiting* to be cracked into by an able-minded lady. And sometimes it takes something as dumb as Affirmative Action to give a woman the opportunity to prove that she (and consequently other women) *can* keep up and/or excel beyond the abilities of her male contemporaries.

So basically, I think it sucks, but at the same time it's kind of necessary.

And yeah, it's nice when some random thing helps me out. It'd be a lot nicer if I could get in solely based on my own merits, but that still hasn't quite become a reality yet, at least not from my perception.

I'm all for "bucking the system" as long as you do it for the right reason.
