Concerned

So, as part of the UberProject at The Job, we're kind of forced to work with two other service providers, in order to deliver the final product to the client: we provide content, another provider also does content, and then the third is the "technical provider," so they'll host the product and are also theoretically supposed to build the framework for the product, and make all of our content work within the confines of the chosen CMS/LMS.

Maybe these other providers just aren't used to having anyone from my Org actually *know* something about building spiffy web products, but I'm more than a little concerned that I keep seeing evidence that I know more about website technology than the technical provider.

When I've asked for various tweaks to the site design, that I know for a fact can be done *easily* with CSS, they tend to get all flustered and start making with the, "ohhhh, I don't know if we can do that but we'll try!" That already gave me pause.

But today? They showed us how they plan to incorporate a smaller, related site (which I redesigned a few months ago) into the UberProject, and you know what the plan is? Plopping the whole site into a page in the CMS as an iframe.

AND, if that wasn't clunky enough, they were saying stuff like, "yeah, [so-and-so] just stumbled upon this iframe thing," and acting like it's all new and awesome, when anime nerds have been using iframes obnoxiously in their fansites for several years. So, SO not 1337.

And don't even get me started on the other content provider, who seems to think that they are awesome at design, even though everything they've made thus far has been the very definition of "form over function," when the UberProject is supposed to be content-driven.

I sometimes think that two of me could get this site done in half the time that all these other people are taking, *and* do it better. It burns, you guys!!

So, who is this other service provider? I haven't done much web design in years now and it sounds like an easy place for someone with my skills and experience to get a job ;p

I mean the clueless one, of course, not the pretentious design-as-art one.

If you ever felt like moving to California, they'd be extraordinarily fortunate to have you! ;p

Ha!

Meh, I was just mocking them anyway. Let's face it, if I really had that much ambition to be a professional web designer or developer, I'd probably have been one by now. And at this point, whatever skills I had have a layer of flaky rust on them an inch thick. Took me hours to put together a simple page with some scripting for my real, actual job, partly because I'd forgotten how to write JS, and partly because when I tried to refresh my memory, I could no longer understand the documentation... -_-;;

Yeah, those skills tend to atrophy, but they do come back. (you should've seen me flailing around trying to remember how to write Actionscript a few months ago... feh!)
