Radio silence and a not-promotion

So check this: I put in a request to have Trillian installed on my workstation yesterday? DENIED. I apparently don't get to use IM at all at The Job! I guess we're kicking it old school around here.

Anyhoo, I suggest leaving a message on my other IM, until my schedule shakes out better. It's always on, but it'll be set to Away most of the time.

At the end of wushu class yesterday, I got promoted, so to speak, to second-degree white belt. I didn't have a belt at all, before, and now I have a white one. Why am I not super-elated about it? Well, it was a pretty arbitrary promotion, in that it seemed to have more to do with how long you'd been going there than how good or bad you were.

And, there's also the fact that:
a) I'm still a white belt. :p
b) I'm still in the same (white belt) class.
c) The munchkin 7-year-olds got the same promotion. x_x

David did give me some advice on how to practice more advanced stuff and generally keep from going crazy, but I'm not likely to fully escape White Belt Hell until the next belt test, which I think is still a couple months away. Waaaaaaugh.

I think I have a default coffee shop for my work commute. :D damnportlanders recommended Coffee Plant, and both their mochas and their scones are very tasty. There are a couple other shops I may try in the coming weeks, but at least I know of one that's good!

In other news: Yet another reason why Fox News is crap. I love that Rep. Conyers is making a big deal about it; they already deserved to look bad, even before this latest blunder. Bwaahaha.

Yeah, I'm used to being on the bleeding edge of technology, but that's sure not the case around here. In fairness, we weren't *really* supposed to install software without approval at Old Job, either, but people just did it anyway. ;p 'Round here they're all paranoid about viruses, though, so I can't even download an executable.

Lord help me if I ever have to, I don't know, write a PHP/MySQL app. ::sigh::

Ha, don't ever work in banking:

no IMs

no non-work email (including gmail, hotmail, etc.)

no ssh-ing to your home computer

no access to certain classes of web sites, including "social", "gaming", and "profanity" (which includes some song lyric sites). Hell, nintendo.com was blocked until someone requested it to be unblocked for "business purposes". I'm lucky I can still read slashdot...
