Mar. 6th, 2006 05:55 pmOh, man. Where to begin. How about with lots of peektures!
So! Friday, I ran my ass out to Costco after work, and kind of went nuts getting judges' lunch and after-party snacks. The fun part was hauling all of it back to the car by myself. Ouch. Anyway, after that was all done, I had to change clothes and run out to the pre-tournament banquet, which actually turned out pretty good. Chicago and Maryland came, as well as some other solo competitors and all the judges, so we mingled and actually got to know some of the non-Oregon people. It'd have been better if more of the other schools had showed up--apparently, they were on the road until pretty late that night--but for those that *did* come, I'd call it a success.
We killed an hour or two at the Break, where I played DDR--in heels, ha!--for the first time in months. I actually did okay, and did mostly 7-footers. Then, it was floor setup time at 11:45... gah. We laid out the carpet and set up all the judging areas, yadda yadda, long story short, I didn't get home and into bed until almost 2:30am. Yeah, it was a long day.
So, imagine how happy I was to be awake again at 6:30am, in order to get back to campus for registration check-ins at 7:00! ::dies:: Yeah, I survived all of Saturday on 4 hours of sleep and two *very* large lattes. XD Allison, one of the newbies, was there with me helping with check-in, and neither of us is a morning person, so it suuuucked, but we got through it.
It was actually a *lot* of fun, though. The volunteers were on point, everyone was very helpful, and even though I was busy for most of the day, I still got to see a lot of the events. Comments have been rolling in over the past couple of days, and everyone's talking about how smoothly the tournament went. I'd have to agree, too; we went through the events faster than we expected, and finished up early. And, of course, there was the Big Tricks competition at the end, which was entertaining.
And OMG, I am so proud of my team!! I knew that Oregon would kick some ass this year, and they didn't disappoint me. I think we have some very talented and motivated beginners, in particular. I couldn't be happier with how they performed, and I only hope that I can make them just as proud when I compete in a few weeks. Gah. x_x
Oh yeah, and since Oregon didn't have time to put together a team set, we did our own little "group set"... the infamous Thriller Dance!! ::rotfl:: It was pretty funny.
After the tournament ended, I had just enough time to run home, change clothes, and pick up a massive caramel macchiato (with an extra espresso shot, wooo!), and then all the competitors, judges, and volunteers basically invaded the Hometown Buffet for dinner. We got to mingle with all the schools this time; I wound up sitting with some folks from Stanford, and they were good people.
After that, it was time for the after-party, which, well, had its ups and downs. It seemed like we were waiting around forever for the music to get started, but once it did, there was some good dancing and drinking and all that. Oregon knows how to keep a dance floor alive, people.
Anyhoo, I got a call from Ben after a couple hours of dancing and frolicking, and I was feeling like taking off at that point, anyway--it's way too much effort for me to be uber-social and chatty with a bunch of strangers when I'm that sleep-deprived and over-caffeinated--so I went to get my coat and say some goodbyes, when the front door opened... and there was the EPD. x_x
We'd been grasping at straws to find an after-party venue, and this was a fairly nice house in a quiet neighborhood, on a small street, and to be honest, I had a feeling the party would get busted when I actually saw the house, so I wasn't entirely shocked that it did. One of the neighbors called in a noise complaint, and FOUR COPS came down and processed everybody. Overkill, much? It seemed like most of them were rookie cops, and jerky ones, at that, from all accounts.
They lined up the over-21 people with ID and started checking them and filing them out of the house, but I'd left my purse (and subsequently, my ID) outside in the car, so they were going to make me wait until they processed everybody before I could get my purse. Fortunately, I got one of the other over-21ers to take my car keys and rescue my purse, so I got out pretty easily in the end. I offered some people rides home, and made my escape as soon as I was able, but I felt SO BAD for everyone who was there. It was a really sucky way to end an otherwise fun weekend.
So, *after* I escaped from the after-party, I went downtown to meet up with Ben, Jeremy, and Andy and do some bar-hopping. (well, there was only one actual "hop", but whatever) I found them at Sam Bond's, where Steve Wynn and the Miracle 3 were playing. I hadn't heard them before, but it was a good show; enjoyable tunes, and they're definitely skilled. Also, they have a chick drummer, and I have an insane affinity for chick drummers. ::rotfl::
Anyhoo, we checked out Jameson's after the band stopped for the night--it's the new place that opened up where Paradiso used to be--and it's pretty cool and not at all pick-up-bar-ish. After closing time, we wandered around town for a little while. The Taco Bell people kick ass, because they let us walk up to the drive-thru window and order food, which they aren't supposed to do, exactly. Anyhoo, after having some food and biffing around a bit more, Andy gave me and Ben rides home, and I finally fell into bed sometime after 3am.
Sunday was lazy, and that was great. I watched the TV that I missed on Thursday and Friday, and biffed around. W00t! No complaints. Happy!

Date: 2006-03-10 09:37 pm (UTC)UO actually did pretty well. David tied for 3rd in advanced broadsword, woo! We also pulled down 3rd in intermediate men's broadsword, 3rd in intermediate men's staff, 2nd *and* 3rd place in beginner men's changquan, and 3rd in beginner women's changquan. We also got a 1st and 2nd in beginner men's staff, but they were the only people competing in that event.
