"I'm going to eat Peter!"
Apr. 5th, 2005 03:23 pmHeh, I've been working on this sporadically since last night, and I think I'm done for the moment... beware of edits later on, though!
Highlights:
--Watching Family Guy and Chappelle's Show on Jon's laptop during the van ride.
--The other van tried to ask for a bathroom stop, saying it was urgent, but we couldn't hear the reason why through the walkie-talkie. A minute or two later, they pulled up next to us, and holding up a sign that said "CHANGE PAD," while David waved a wrapped maxi-pad around in the window. Heh, so much for discretion. :)
--Vietnamese food for dinner (rice vermicelli <3), followed by boba!
--Funny, slightly off-color jokes about "sacrificing" the freshmen to, uh, various people.
--Phil doing the Fob accent at the toll booth, AGAIN. ::laughs::
--Little kids, little kids! I know, I did experience the cuteness last year, but man, I just can't get over how adorable they are. There was a little girl in the 8-12 year-old division that did nanquan *and* broadsword, among other things, and I was ready to adopt her right then and there.
--Finding a hot shirt at The Gap.
--Thomas came to visit us at the tournament! *AND* he made us a totally awesome Oregon Wushu sign! That's right, you can go anywhere in the world, but you're still Oregon Wushu for life. :D
--Nanquan! I love doing it; it feels like putting on my favorite shirt--it feels comfortable and natural for me, but I also feel a little more special and a little more noticeable. Even though I messed up a little bit early on, it was just so cool to be doing it that I didn't care.
--Getting a gold, even if it was a gimme.
--A bit of backstory: I ran into a guy in the warmup area at Davis, who had silks just like mine--dark blue with silver trim--and we had a funny little "hey, nice silks!" exchange. Anyway, I ran into the same guy *again* in the warmup area at Berkeley, but he was wearing different silks this time. He turned to his buddy and said, "yeah, she's the one who had the sexy silks; I had to change mine 'cos she was making them look too good!" It was pretty funny. :)
--Some random guy at the afterparty giving me a can of beer from a stash he had in his car, after all the liquor ran out at the party... even if it *was* Miller Light. (and *yes*, it was a sealed container ;p)
--The Hong Kong demo. It started off a little slow, but even their basic moves were almost eerily in synch, so it was pretty good. And when they started busting out the big tricks, so awesome!
Low points:
--Getting all gassy from the Vietnamese food. ::rotfl:: Luckily, it didn't start until after we all went to bed, so I was the only one who had to suffer the effects. ;p
--No visit from Maya :( She has some crazy case of the chickenpox, though, so she needed to stay home and rest anyway!
--Actually shopping at The Gap. Yes, I'm rather ashamed of myself, LOL! But really, it's all Cat's fault, because we were getting lunch, and she wanted to stop there and look for a pair of sunglasses. And, the one shirt I actually bought was $13, which is not as ludicrously overpriced as everything else in the store.
--Waiting for 90 minutes in the warmup area between checking in for nanquan and actually starting the event... and then having to wait *another* 90 minutes in the warmup area before changquan! Laaaame.
--Sissy last-minute rule changes prohibiting beginners from doing basically *any* difficulty moves.
--Changquan. I pretty much knew I was going to come in last before it even started, because my form wasn't as difficult as the compulsory, which everyone else was doing. I feel like I could have maybe *done* the compulsory, too, if I had actually been given the opportunity to learn it. I might have still come in last even *with* the compulsory, but at least I wouldn't have felt like I'd lost the event before I even stepped out on the carpet. That was a huge bummer.
--Me and Peter getting stuck with the cheeseburgers that the kitchen staff spilled a bunch of salt on. I was two bites away from finishing my burger and aaaaaaggghhh salt overload x_x
--The afterparty shutting down after we'd only been there for TWENTY MINUTES. And that's a generous estimate.
--Sleeping in the van. My back and neck are *still* hurting from it.
--Not taking a shower for the entire weekend. I'm something of a personal hygiene junkie, and a semi-compulsive hand-washer, so you can imagine what *that* did to my psyche.
--Nearly peeing my pants because we were driving around on Saturday night/Sunday morning trying to find someplace that was A) open at 4am, and B) had a public toilet. We had to go to an effing hospital to find a toilet, and it was totally deserted... I felt like I was trapped in a game of Resident Evil. I've never had to pee so bad in my life!
So yeah, overall, I'd say that this trip was more fun than the Davis trip, although it totally exhausted me beyond all reason. I wasn't really in the right mindset to compete, but outside of that, everything was pretty great, I'm happy. :)
The changquan event really drove home the point that I got shafted this year, though, in terms of learning new material. Outside of nanquan, I haven't really been pushed at all to improve, and I haven't really learned anything. I wanted more than this, and I could have done more than this, if I'd been given even a few more minutes of attention at practice. I guess I just need to complain about it more loudly, na? I rarely feel compelled to complain about anything, so they probably just assume that I'm happy with what I have.
Anyway, today I am super-cranky and I don't feel very good, but I'm going lifting anyway. Sigh, it never ends, right?

Date: 2005-04-06 03:46 am (UTC)We had to sleep in the van because Phil somehow got like half the team to join VSA, and VSA Culture Night was this past Sunday at 5:30p. Oh yeah, and Daylight Savings robbed us of another hour of sleep. Somebody got the crazy idea to just pack up all our stuff and start driving at 3am instead of trying to sleep for a measly 3 or 4 hours at Brandon's, and the drivers traded off driving and sleeping while the rest of us tried to sleep in the back of the van. Blaahhhh.

Date: 2005-04-06 04:01 am (UTC)Gah, I can't go one day without a shower without feeling icky. I so know how you feel here. I'm, like, you're long lost spiritual twin sometimes.
