You know, I had a slightly bad feeling when I left the house this morning, but I didn't quite expect THIS.
Apparently, I am down to one job (well, and a MiniJob) *permanently*.
I hauled my ass out of bed early today, got ready, and headed over to Law, where I found that the 1L computer setup presentation was in progress. I stepped in when some other staffers showed up to help out, and I wound up working for about an hour or so. I figured it was the thing to do, because there were more 1Ls that needed help than there were staffers to take care of it all, and there was also some new kid running around doing staff-ish things, so they probably needed an extra hand.
After it was over, I headed upstairs to ask The Boss what was happening around the office and get up to speed, at which point, I was informed that there weren't any hours for me, and there weren't going to be. The cause? As he tells it, "Budget cuts."
Is this starting to sound familiar to anyone else? Because it sure is to ME.
I realize that management must be difficult for people, especially when it comes to releasing current employees. I know *I* wouldn't enjoy the task of laying off or firing somebody. But Christ, don't I, as an employee, have a basic right to a diplomatic, direct, and prompt approach when it comes to be laid off? *Especially* when I haven't been notified of any wrongdoing or lack of satisfaction with my performance? Why in God's name does this keep HAPPENING to me?
If he was hiring a new staff member to replace me, he could have notified me then. (Of this, I am not entirely certain, because it is possible that the new kid could be working for staff tech, rather than the help desk) If he knew there were going to be budget cuts, he could have told me when he found out about them. Now, I've lost valuable time that I *could* have spent looking for a new job, because nobody bothered to take five minutes and notify me that I wouldn't have hours at Law anymore.
This time, however, I'm not going to just puss out and go quietly into the night. I'm in the process of composing a nice, diplomatic e-mail telling him that I would have appreciated a more direct approach from him, because damnit, I'm not happy with how this was handled, and he needs to know that. I'm going to deal with him the way he should have dealt with me.
On the bright side, I get to spend the rest of my day at home. Uh, yay? :p
Anyway, I'm going to stop abusing this lab computer, go talk to the EMU lab manager, and head for home.
