I'm trying to install MySQL in my homedir on Gladstone (a.k.a. the server for students here at the Uni), and I've been, uh, having problems. Can anybody give me a run-down of what I should be doing?

In advance, THANK YOU. ;_;

EDIT: While waiting for libraries to compile and such, I've been goofing around at Gaia Online. It's kind of funny and pointless, and there are a lot of teenage dorks running around, but the idea of decorating my little avatar is apparently enough to keep me looking around there. LMAO!

Anyway, if you're interested in that sort of thing, you should JOIN, because it'll earn me more bling bling, so I can buy more schwag! The poor thing needs it--I didn't like the peasant dress, and I could only afford a shirt for her, so I spent the first 2-3 hours of computer time with my avatar running around in her underpants. ASDKFASKLFHALKH!

What kinda problems? First thing I can think of is that you need to specify where to install it, or it'll default to /usr/local/bin, which you obviously won't have write permissions on. So you'll have to do something like ./configure --prefix=~/some_dir_to_put_it_all_in before you do 'make' & 'make install'.

Hrm, well I did use ./configure --prefix=~/some_dir_to_put_it_all_in, but I might not have used a good location. ^^;;

But yeah, the real roadblock was that it crapped out somewhere in the middle of 'make'. I'd have to do it again to remember exactly what errors came up. ^^;

For some reason that Gaia sounds oddly appealing. Maybe [livejournal.com profile] inawhile is right and I am gay and just haven't realized it yet.

Paste the output either here or in email & I'll see what I can figure out. If make is failing, it's probably a dependency issue, which means you might have to compile & install something else (i.e. libraries or header files) first.
