Fresh off the boat

Is anybody out there having a Halloween bash? I've been thinking that maybe we should throw one, but if somebody else is planning one, I think maybe I'd rather go to yours. :)

I have, apparently, just been "fobbed." Ha!

Seriously, they just added some new security access stuff to the building, so they're distributing key fobs to everyone. I have to say that I *hated* having to haul around multiple keys and keycards for my previous jobs, so I was pretty darned happy at not having to cart that junk around at this one... but now, I have added bulk from Key Fobs. BOO-URNS.

I really mention this, however, I haven't yet found anything that explains *why* they're called Fobs, so I'm having a hard time getting the other meaning of the word out of my head. That being, of course, the FOB that refers to Asians: Fresh Off the Boat.

I hear it a lot from the Asian people I know, or at least the more trendy/fashionable ones. "Fobby" haircuts, being fobulous, and so forth. It's pretty funny that younger Asians have basically adopted and redefined what originated as an offensive term. It's kind of like what some women have attempted to do by "reclaiming" the word "cunt," except that the Asian community actually seems to be succeeding at it.

So, yeah, when I hear "fob," it's all about Asians. Even being half-Asian, it's hard for me not to make that leap.

And you know? This whole Key Fob nonsense is just going to make it even *more* confusing for me whenever anyone starts talking about Fall Out Boy. ;)
