Hey dudes. It occurs to me that, in preparation for the Hood Canal trip, I should stop procrastinating and actually buy my own tent. But, since I only really need a single-occupancy tent, I'd also like to kill two birds with one stone by getting a tent that I could use for backpacking at a later date.

SO: can you recommend an inexpensive, compact-and-lightweight tent that would work well in a backpacking context? Or maybe a location in Portland where I could acquire one?

Gracias!

Bi-Mart, Fred Meyers, and Big 5 Sporting have some amazing deals on tents. Big 5 has a three man(I think) for 29.99 right now and the singles are normally a bit less.

Unless you want to spend an atrocious amount of money for one at REI, I would recommend one of the stores listed above. I have mine and it was form Bi-Mart and it's awesome.

=)

They are light weight, rain repellent, have a mesh top and mesh door so the tent can be open without allowing bugs to crawl in...good stuff!

dude, totally check out next adventure for cheap gear! i've been meaning to go there for a nice 1 person tent too. REI really does have some amazing high quality ones but they do come with a price tag. You can find a good 1 person tent from REI for $75 at the cheap end and average around $130-150 for mid-range. I think it's worth it if you're doing a lot of camping and need a good tent for all seasons, but if it's a couple times a summer thing then a cheaper one is the way to go!

I have a tent that can be borrowed. Or given away. I don't know that I'll ever do anything with it again. I also have a sweet internal frame backpack (Gregory) that was over $300 when I bought it. I should probably hang on to that, but I'd be willing to loan it.

I want to go camping/backpacking. Let me know if there's ever room fpr an extra person...

Next Adventure. If you haven't gone before, tell them it's your first time when you check out. They also have used stuff in the basement, and as mentioned before, it's less expensive than REI.

And the "pitching a tent" analogy is being taken to new heights (or lows) in my brain. Thanks for that.

Hahaha. My choice of subject line *was* entirely intentional, so I'm at least partly to blame. ;)

But then I was thinking how much easier it is to pitch a tent when you have another person to help you insert the poles into the sleeve, and how sometimes you have to bend and cortort to get it into the right position, and how if you're not on a level surface sometimes you end up sleeping in a wet spot... and... and...

Oh, yes.

If you or anyone you know has a Costco membership, we picked up a fantastic 3-person backpacking Kelty tent for only $57. It's really lightweight and Kelty is an awesome brand. They also have some other super-cheap camping equipment, and believe me, I've been price checking all over the place for this kind of stuff this spring.

Oh, hey, that's good to know! Now that I'm thinking about it, I've heard of them before as being freqently-used in backpacking, but I forgot that.
