SO! Imnaha was a good, good time. Sadly, I do not have photos to show you, because "somebody" decided to go into my room and borrow the camera battery without asking or telling me. Granted, the camera gear does technically belong to the business, but come ON. Anyway, I didn't discover this until we were already quite a ways down I-84, and there aren't exactly a ton of camera shops in Eastern Oregon, so I was stuck with a non-functional camera all weekend.
Punching him in the groin a lot still sounds like a really good plan. :p
Anyhoo, I wrote a lot of notes in my Moleskine, since I wasn't documenting it all via camera, so here are bullet-y trip highlights and random amusements:
--After 6 1/2 hours in the car with Bo and Rich, we arrived sometime after 1am. On the final stretch, we came around a turn and were ambushed by horses! They were just standing at the side of the road, so there wasn't danger of hitting them, but it was a small road, and the horses were *huge*, so it was pretty freaky, all the same.
--Friday was a fairly relaxed-and-groovy day of hanging out and playing games, along with some hiking around the canyon and watching in amusement as we came up the trail and cows ran away from us. The whole place was freakin' gorgeous, and the weather was perfect. There's something about dry climate landscapes that grabs me.
--While playing Apples to Apples, I had to judge the following options for the word, "Sultry": Danny DeVito, Steve Martin, Walt Disney, and A Mummy. Irony does not even *begin* to cover that. XD
--Saturday got off to an excellent start: eggs, biscuits and sausage gravy for breakfast! I've never been much of a gravy person, but this is a combination I could get used to. Dangerous noms!
--So, Rich has this board game known as Pandemic. As you might expect from the title, the game has you cooperating with the other players to try and prevent diseases from exploding into a global pandemic before you can cure them. Winning the game is HARD, and we'd already played it several times before and lost every single time. And on EASY mode! But, through some bizarre twist of fate, we actually managed to beat the effin' game on Saturday! Awww yea. (P.S. I really enjoy cooperative games.)
--The afternoon had me taking off with Kenna and Melissa to the nearby town of Joseph, which is quite cute and touristy. We drove through the area, and there was snow in the mountains. And, as we drove around near Wallowa Lake, there were huge mounds of snow and ice, but when we got out of the car, it didn't feel cold enough for snow. I tried climbing on them, because I had way too much energy that day, and Kenna should have a lot of pictures of them.
--We were hoping to get a tour of the bronze foundry in Joseph, but they apparently don't do tours during the off-season. We did get to check out their gallery, though, and the work in there was amazing. There was a surprising variety of treatments and techniques they used on the bronze that made the end result look nothing like bronze. There was color, texture, marbling, and there was even a piece looked like it was made of entirely of driftwood! My favorite pieces, however, were probably these. When I start pulling down the buck$, I may have to buy me one, heh. ;)
--Also of note in Joseph: there were flyers posted on many of the shops advertising a DONKEY BASKETBALL event. There were even pictures on the flyer of people playing basketball while, yes, riding a donkey. There's a part of me that really, really wants to go back out there with my camera to document the ridiculousness.
--As we were leaving, we saw a deer down one of the side streets, so we pulled over to take a look... and found ELEVEN DEER, just hanging out in someone's backyard! I don't think I've ever seen such a large group of deer in one place before, and certainly not up that close.
--Ate Bo's awesome lasagna for dinner on Saturday night, and we also tried the hot tub, but it turned out to be more of a lukewarm tub. We found out later that it wasn't getting hot because the jets were blowing in the cold outside air. Boo-urns! We also closed out the evening with a game of Red Dragon Inn, which was enjoyably silly, and I'm looking forward to playing that again.
--Sunday had us exploring an old mining cave; there were rocks with a lot of green on them, which indicated that the people who'd mined there were probably looking for copper. The cave didn't extend back too terribly far, but it was still pretty cool to take a look around. I also now have a slightly better understanding of rock climbing, because I was climbing things yet again, and Bo and Alex had to coach me on where to find holds so that I could actually climb back down, heh.
--A couple of us also wound up running back from the cave, which was surprisingly awesome, considering I wasn't wearing the greatest shoes for the task. The air felt clean and my pace felt quick. Getting on back on the treadmill at the gym this week paled in comparison.
--A helicopter also landed in the front yard during the morning! They were apparently doing some sort of wildlife surveying, so a truck showed up and was there to refuel them partway through their trip.
--Hot Tub: The Sequel happened in the evening, and it was a hundred times better after having the whole day to heat up. Between that and Kerry's excellent massage earlier in the day, my muscles were downright noodly, and it was fantastic.
--Monday mostly had us packing up and getting ready to head out, so there was yet another long drive in front of us. Most of us stopped in Pendleton for gas and met up in a park for lunch, though, and it was yet another beautiful day.
I'm sure I'm forgetting things, but yes! Overall, a lovely balance of relaxation, exploration, and people time. Good, good, GOOD weekend.
