Non-PAX things
Sep. 10th, 2009 12:41 pmBleh. Still feeling cruddy today, but still not full-blown sick. I even went to bed before 11pm last night, which I NEVER do. Damnit, body, get with the program.
Anyhoo, random notes about things:
I came through the front door after getting home from PAX, and my entryway was blue! Boy apparently decided to paint the house over the weekend, so he painted the entryway, and is almost done with the upstairs bathroom. He also got a bunch of color swatches for the living room, but I'm hesitating on those, because he and Andy are fixated on some really dark colors that I'm not 100% in love with. Still, hooray for walls that are not blandy-blands beige.
In other news, Serafin is also moving out of the house for a few months and staying with friends, but he might move back after that, depending on what rooms are available. He's also going to be staying maybe 4 blocks away from us, so we certainly haven't seen the last of him. ;) With him working evenings and weekend, I didn't exactly see a lot of him anyway, so I figure it'll be about the same.
Those who were paying attention to Twitter know that I was home for maybe half an hour on Sunday evening, and then I was off to Bend with Boy. He'd apparently read about the lava tubes in the Bend area over the weekend, and wanted to go check them out, so he drove me and another friend out to a campsite, while I slept in the front seat for most of the ride.
Being in Bend was really cool, especially after being at PAX. Something about the blue of the sky and the yellow of the plants made the landscape look vibrant, almost to the point of feeling oversaturated. If I hadn't been so blitzed, I'd have taken a hojillion photos, but, well, let's just say sleeping in a 2-person tent with 3 people does not make for the most restful times. Boy got some pictures, though, so that's well enough for me.
And then, being IN the lava tube was something else entirely. We had to bust out the flashlights to even see where we were going, and sounds were very muffled. There were a few other groups passing through, but we couldn't even hear them once they got out of visual range. There were also parts of the tunnel that were small enough to require belly-crawling. At a couple points, we stopped to rest, and turned off the flashlight to conserve the batteries, and it was just WEIRD. You could close your eyes and open then again, and it looked exactly the same. It was totally black and quiet... basically, the complete opposite of the sensory overload that was being in the Exhibit Hall at PAX.
We had a little bit of fun spooking other people by just sitting in the dark very quietly, and waiting for them to stumble upon us. Next time we totally need to bring crunchy snacks and eat them in the darkness. Or some other edible thing that would sound creepy, gross, and possibly flesh-like. Muahaha. Anyhoo, after the lava tube, we biffed around and found this very cool canyon somewhere north of Bend, and then finally headed home.
