Finances appear to be aligning in such a way that I can build up a good chunk of savings, AND also do some frivolous and cool thing without obliterating said savings. The money is not in-hand yet, but it's due to me, and will be coming in fairly soon.

With that in mind, the notion of going to PAX has moved from a faint Maybe to Serious Consideration.

So, tell me your tales of PAX, my dears! How does it all work? Just how awesome IS it? Tips on how to minimize costs associated with it are also appreciated, because I like having money and should continue to hone my miser-type skills.

I went to PAX back in '05 and had a blast. It has only gotten larger since then. There's tons to do... boardgames, video games, the company booths on the showroom floor, tons of tournaments/contests.... you really can't go wrong. I cleaned up at the "name this obscure old video game contest". After I got like 3 in a row within seconds they said i couldn't play anymore =p

The only real expenses would be hotel and food. The convention itself isn't really that expensive.

If you know friends in the area that's the cheap way to go.

Here's my thing with PAX: I'll be honest, I'm not even that much of a gamer. (I'm sort of a gamer-by-association, thanks to Peter.) But it's really fun to get out of town with a bunch of friends, see a bunch of sweet new things, get to listen to funny people talk about the stuff they're passionate about (like, hey, Wil Wheaton! and Gabe and Tycho!), and get rick-rolled by Jonathon Coulton, and see people in awesome costumes (and also awesome T-shirts), etc. ALSO, there will be an abundance of sweet photography opportunities. AND, there is a crepe stand in the convention center.

Ahaha - figures, you finally decide to come up to my neighborhood for a convention, and I'm going down to Portland for a different convention on the same weekend. :P

I've had many friends who've really enjoyed PAX, but be forewarned - if you're looking to play demos and whatnot, the lines have apparently gotten insane in recent years. Many hours of sitting in line await you, if demo playing is your goal.
