What Would Brian Boitano... MAKE?! This will be an ACTUAL SHOW. XD I've already said it once this week, but Food Network is one of the only reasons I actually miss having cable. ;)

Anyhoo, two food questions today, since y'all are full of awesome ideas:

1) Something tasty and healthy to make out of cabbage? I got an entire head of green cabbage from my organics box and I'm not really sure what to do with it.

2) Do plums freeze well? I'm likely to get a bunch from [livejournal.com profile] bloodred37 soon, so I'm wondering what my options are for making sure they get all used before spoiling. :)

P.S. I don't love cole slaw, so that's a no-go for the cabbage. :)

You can always get some vodka and make plum liqueur. ;) < /alcoholic>

1. Cabbage rolls. *DROOL* (or if you're hardcore like me, sauerkraut, but that takes a lot more work) healthy it up by using brown rice and the leanest pork and beef you can find. :)

We recently tried adding chopped cabbage and cilantro to burritos, and it was really good!

I love steamed cabbage but I guess that's kind of boring. :D

And you will be getting plums on Saturday (you're going to Niv's picnic, right?)

Damn it! I totally failed to grab a pile of plums to bring home with me. I will have to grab some from you next week, if not sooner!!! =)

Chop it up slaw-style with some brocolini and carrots and make yourself a sesame-ginger salad to go with grilled shrimp or similar.

Coleslaw!

Oh. Healthy. Feh. :P

Sauerkraut! (It's not really that hard, I've done it.. in this weather you'll want A/C or a cool basement, though.)

Oh, yeah, heh. I probably should've mentioned that I'm not a fan of coleslaw. ^^;

You just wait. I'll convert you one of these days.

Maybe.

Or maybe not.

Who knows.

coleslaw or cabbage rolls or, you know, a snack with some balsamic vinegar...

for the plums, you could make a plum jam.

If you are feeling lazy, when I was in the Peace Corps I used to take cabbage, tuna, and cooked rotini and mix it together with a vinaigrette to make a tasty salad.

As for other stuff:

That's a neat idea! Do you have any other good "lazy" food ideas. As a busy, single mom (and student) I could really use some more ideas for quick dinners / lunches! =)

Not really. I'm not working and the closest I have to kids are three chickens, so these days I spend tons of time cooking. I guess you could try out pizza. If you buy some not-too-sweet pasta sauce (I used Newman's Own), a premade crust (or you can buy premade dough or french bread), and preshredded cheese along with any toppings that suit you, you can make an awfully large number of dinners. Both EatingWell (eatingwell.com) and Cooking Light (cookinglight.com) have lots of "less than 30 minute" dinners.

I have a recipe in one of my cookbooks, The World Vegetarian, for a type of cabbage rolls that's very similar to dolmas. It has rice, raisins, cinnamon, olive oil, lemon juice and a bunch of other good stuff. There's also a lazy dolmas-type casserole with cabbage where it's layered instead of rolled. Super super tasty! =)

Cabbage is also really good shredded and topped onto fish tacos or made into a salad with an asian-style vinaigrette. I've also seen a recipe in the aforementioned cookbook for sweet-and-sour cabbage. (note: this is not your Chinese-American restaurant, red-dye type of sweet-and-sour sauce). I think it has orange marmalade in it, if I recall correctly, for the sweetness.

You could also try doing a general recipe search for cabbage and see what the net turns up.

In my humble opinion the above mentioned cabbage and rice and stuff casserole is your best bet. You're welcome to call me for the recipe, if you'd like! =)
