DUDE!! Teleportation! Yeah, we won't exactly be Star Trekkin' across the universe any time soon, and after you read the article, teleportation seems to be a somewhat inaccurate descriptor, but it's still cool as hell. :)

VH1's upcoming I Love The 90's specials have me feeling rather confused; I don't know whether to roll my eyes or be genuinely excited. On the one hand, isn't it *way* too early to be looking back nostalgically upon the 90's? They ended less than five years ago! But on the other hand, they're going to make fun of some things that deserve to be made fun of. And there will be More Hal!! Hal Sparks can bring the funny to my house ANY TIME HE WANTS. He can also bring himself to my house any time he wants, but that's another thing entirely. Muahaha. :)

Anyway, I went to my appointment at 24 Hour Fatness (apparently, I'm going to keep calling it that no matter what I do) and got the grand tour and such. They did some measurements and number-crunching while I was there, too, like measuring my body fat percentage, *without* using the stupid BMI scale that told me I was fat when I was a size 8. The percentages were not great news, but I expected that. However, the two ladies helping me out got *really* jazzed when they calculated that I have 131 lbs. of lean body mass. That's a lot, I guess? ^^;

So, yes, I joined, and I actually went and worked out after I got off of work. I realized that having to pay money for it would make me feel more obligated to go work out, and less likely to make lame excuses. Which is good, because it means I won't be sitting on my ass losing every advantage that wushu has given me over the past 7 months. ;p And they said I could bring my weapons into the facility and practice weapons forms, which is hella cool.

I think I'm going to start reading every night before bed, like I used to in high school, before I came to college and had to start reading boring texts all the time instead. ;p I desperately want to go out and grab a Murakami book, but I have other things here that I should probably finish off first. Heh. Also: anyone out there want to loan me some Harry Potter? I never thought I'd ask, but those pesky movies are wearing me down.

This meme is, uh, interesting.

What kind of disease are you?

skeets:

skeets is caused by Satan.

skeets disease turns you into a slug
skeets can only be cured by quitting your job and becoming a canadian elvis impersonator.
Name?

So, Canadian citizenship *and* a stint with the Flying Elvises? Apparently I'm tough to get rid of. :)

Anyway, I'm off like a gym sock.

24 Hour Fatness

Y'know, I just joined 24 Hr myself. The guy pinched the flab on my stomach and measured it with some weird device that looked like a compass, then told me my weight is 20 per cent body fat. Somehow, I feel that just can't be right. (He also said I should pay extra for a personal trainer to lose that fat. Hmmm....)

While not quite teleportation, quantum entanglement COULD allow FTL communication, which is still pretty cool.

But I still say we'll have replicators (aka "fabricators" in nanotech lingo) long before teleportation and human-scale FTL transit. They've already got 3D printers that'll make a mold of any object. Although I do remember a story from quite a while ago about creating wormholes (this isn't the same one, but oh well) by making two pairs of completely identical plates & charging them.. Hm. Oh well.

IIRC, replicators - in the Trek sense - work by creating matter directly from energy, not by using nanotech to fabricate complex objects from raw materials.

Of course, the latter is somewhat more feasible...

I always knew Skeets was one of Ol' Red's tricks. ;)

Oooh, ooooh! I'm always recommending Battle Royale by Koshun Takami... It's a little, um, gorier than Harry Potter (HP 1 and 2 were excellent, but the 3rd was way too slow), and not exactly light bedtime reading, but I'm sure you'll love it!

actually it "is" teleportation. If you have two atoms both in a given state and you EXACTLY replicate the others quantum state then the two atoms have changed places without actually moving... atoms don't have serial numbers after all. In Star Trek they disassemble you while at the same time recording your exact "arrangement", they then reassemble you at another location... your atoms didn't really move did they. In fact your atoms don't even exist anymore... That raises the interesting question of "what is you?" Are the atoms the important part? or the arrangement? It can't really be the atoms because they are in constant flux, if it's the pattern what happens if we make an identical pattern, is that something more than a clone? GEB goes into allot of this stuff, kind of a big "what is I?" thing. I don't understand it, and it all scares me a WHOLE lot. You think Catholicism is scary? Wait until the Dune style religions start popping up in this century >_< What mathematicians are contributing to our understanding of reality and self is turning my hair white.
