MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

I love Good Eats. This show always cracks me up. :D And earlier on Food Network, there was a show on where some folks were making these really amazing gingerbread houses.

Also, since I flipped past it earlier--in favor of The World Is Not Enough: Robert Carlyle! Even if his villain was pretty weak-sauce in concept. Against: Denise Richards. She cannot act her way out of a paper bag.

A random aside from my time on the road yesterday: I passed by a highway exit going to Sims Rd! LMAO! If it had been called Sims Way, I'd have been completely owned, because the street in The Sims is called Sim Way, but I was still amused, because I'm a neeerrrrrd.

I called my house earlier and James didn't pick up, so I'm hoping that means he went to his grandma's house already, and that they'll let him get some sleep. Everybody should spend Christmas with someone they care about.

I miss my place already--my parents tend to keep the house cold, and my old bed is long gone, so I'm currently sleeping in a queen size which is very comfortable, but it feels a little odd to be sleeping in it alone. I think that mostly, when I go out of town, I just miss all my own things. It seems like I develop odd attachments to the few creature comforts I own outright. At least I have Ed (the car), though--I can look out the window and think, "ye-eah, that's my ride, yo!" Or you know, something equally dorky-sounding.

Gah, what is it about Emeril that makes me want to gouge my own eyes out? Annoying.

1. What did you do in 2003 that you'd never done before?
Wrote most of a novel, learned to knit well, saw Rufus Wainwright in concert, took up a martial art, got an internship, had a 6th level RP character, completed a cata on DDR, owned a new car, learned PHP and MySQL, co-directed a play of somewhat questionable quality, found a hairdresser that I like, learned to like several foods that I'd previously professed to hating, went on a solo road trip, and graduated from college. Not to mention several other things that I'm probably forgetting.

2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I don't think I bothered last year. I always have goals in my mind, though, and I did accomplish some of those.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
No, but with all the crazy married people that are MY AGE running around, it's only a matter of time. ;p

4. Did anyone close to you die?
No, thankfully.

5. What countries did you visit?
On my budget, I'm lucky if I make it out of the state, much less the country. ;ppp

6. What would you like to have in 2004 that you lacked in 2003?
Greater success--especially with financial means. I'm really starting to feel the pressure of being broke all the time.

7. What date from 2003 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
You know, I can't think of anything. It's been a pretty even-keel sort of year.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Graduating!!!

9. What was your biggest failure?
Not getting in better shape.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
I used to get sick at the drop of a hat, so I think I came out ahead on that front. I didn't really hurt myself otherwise, although the first few days of wushu helped show me the meaning of physical pain. :)

11. What was the best thing you bought?
For myself: my scanner. For someone else: concert tickets.

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
Alyson, for continuing to chase her dreams with endless fervor.
C, for finishing his honors thesis.
James, for taking his first few steps towards what is sure to be a lifetime of success.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
Someone in my family, although that also bleeds into 2002, technically.

14. Where did most of your money go?
Bills. So exciting is the life of me. :p

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about? The concerts I went to.

16. What song will always remind you of 2003? The Anniversary - Perfectly.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i.happier or sadder? Slightly happier.
ii. thinner or fatter? A little thinner.
iii. richer or poorer? About the same, really.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Spent time with friends and family, worked out more often, shown affection to more people, spoken out more.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Ditching class, procrastinating, being stoic and keeping feelings to myself, watching so much TV. And sleeping, but I always wish I didn't have to do as much of that. :)

20. How will you be spending Christmas?
I spent Christmas Eve with my parents, and the 3 of us will be spending Christmas Day at my grandpa's house with the rest of my dad's side of the fam.

Where's #21, people? ;p

22. Did you fall in love in 2003?
Nah, but I didn't really need to, did I? :)

23. How many one-night stands?
Uh? As if I could ever actually be that casual about fooling around with guys.

24. What was your favorite TV program?
King of the Hill, Alias, Good Eats, Coupling, Queer Eye... cripes, I watch too much TV.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
I'm more ticked off at them than actually hating them, but there have been a few people who have moved towards my bad side.

26. What was the best book you read?
The Mists of Avalon. Of course, I didn't get to read that much this year, so bear that in mind.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Probably The Anniversary. Even if I knew about them in 2002, I didn't *really* start loving them until this year.

28. What did you want and get?
A bachelor's degree, and oodles of knowledge and skills.

29. What did you want and not get?
A bigger budget, a better job.

30. What was your favorite film of this year?
Pirates of the Caribbean, Bubba Ho-Tep, Spirited Away, and Return of the King. (what, you wanted me to pick just one? ;p)

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
On the actual day of, I saw a movie with [livejournal.com profile] junsiew and had dessert at Cafe Zenon, and studied for a midterm (bleh!). The night before it, I had a big dinner at Misako with a bunch of my friends, and most of us went out to a movie afterward.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
More self-motivation.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2003?
Be happy, clever, and comfortable. And sometimes, let the clothes speak *for* you. (STFU! ^_-)

34. What kept you sane?
Having a comfortable home/bedroom, where I could hide out and decompress when I needed to.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
JON STEWART. (marry me!) And Katori Shingo. KimuTaku, to some degree. Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom--the former is bursting with talent, the latter is just too pretty.

36. What political issue stirred you the most?
There were quite a few that had me peeved, although I showed the most activism against the proposal of a gay marriage ban.

37. Who did you miss?
Some of my high school friends. My extended family. People who graduated and moved out of town, like [livejournal.com profile] whiteraevyn. Some people who were physically around a lot, but whom I didn't reconnect with as much as I should have. The Y-Con posse--Alyson, Margeaux, Maya, and Julia. *Especially* Julia, since she's gone and fallen off the face of the earth. I should have talked with Amer more, too.

38. Who was the best new person you met?
Everyone at JSO--I'm not really close with any of them, but they are always a nice bunch of people. I also feel I should mention [livejournal.com profile] craftyran. I met her well before 2003, but she's become a real fixture in our wee posse as of late, and I'm happy about that. :)

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2003?
What happens in your life is, ultimately, up to you.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.
I totally overuse this quote, but for me, a lot of this year has been about achieving, and perservering, and making the best out of bad situations, so:

"By the time I knew, I was born
Reason or quest not being told
What do I do, what should I take
Words "God only knows" won't work for me
Nothing starts nothing ends in this city
Exists on severe lonesome and cruel reality
But still I search for light
I am the trigger, I choose my final way
Whether I bloom or fall is up to me
I am the trigger."

--LUNA SEA, Rosier.

I *am* the trigger, bitches. ;p

Anyhoo, I'd better read and go to sleep--we're supposed to be head out for Grandpa's at 9a tomorrow.

James left at about 8:00 Wed night. I am expecting that the drive went well and was uneventful but it would be nice to hear from him just to be sure.

Sweet, no one is awake. I'm so stealing this quiz.
Also, I thought Robert Carlyle was the best thing about The World is Not Enough. Better than the previous two Bond villains anyway. At least he's not hellbent on taking over the world. I liked that his motivations were more realistic. But yeah, Denise Richards is a shitty actor. Half of that(at least in that movie) isn't completely her fault though. She has some of the worst, most stating-the-obvious lines.
Shot of a bomb, all fucked up looking.
Denise Richards: "Someone's tampered with the bomb!"

I still don't understand the Orlando Bloom thing. But I should probably lay off, I've already irritated two girls with my loathing of him. You women and your Orlando Bloom. Sigh.

At any rate, Merry Christmas and all that.

Yeah, that part of Robert Carlyle's character actually worked okay for me. I mostly thought that the basic concept--i.e. the bullet in his head, will eventually die, can't feel pain bit--was rather hokey.

I think a lot of the Orlando Bloom mania is his being Legolas, because damn, they made some disturbingly pretty elves for the LotR films. It's kind of scary.

For me, it's 99% about his pretty factor. People like Johnny Depp or Jon Stewart easily surpass him in my mind due to talent, intelligence, wit, etc. Although, if Orlando Bloom shows that he's a reasonably intelligent guy with some serious acting chops, then he'll officially be on my List.

Haha. For some reason I completely forgot about that bullet in the head thing. That is monster dumb.

Yeah, I'm actually weirded out by Orlando Bloom's face. Like I didn't even notice until one of my friends pointed it out, but his face is really odd looking. All rough like he's hewn from stone but the sculptor died halfway through the project.

I will cut the boy some slack though, if he shows himself as being capable of playing more than one character... otherwise he's off to Keanu land where all the one-note pieces of wood dance merrily on their piles of undeserved millions.

The funniest thing was when my ex-girlfriend tried to tell me Orlando is hot because he "looks like a bad boy" or something. I was so confused. I assumed the only reason was because he did have that mohawk at some point in real life. Otherwise he looks very homegrown and not bad boy-ish at all.
