Here's one for my fellow college kids. The part that grabs me most is this:
While some jobs -- like teaching -- may fall in and out of favor, experts say students should not pick a degree based on what's hot today. Instead they should focus on what they're good at and what they enjoy.
That's very true, too. What's big one day may rapidly dwindle on the next day, and no one person can really control how the job market moves in that respect. I know at least some of my friends are worried about post-grad job prospects, and hell, sometimes I am, too. But if we're doing something that we're good at and that we enjoy, then maybe we're on the right track after all.
For instance, I'm very aware that internet-related fields aren't as big as they used to be, but I'm still going for web design and dev. I like it, and I'm pretty darn good at it, too. And yeah, maybe folks in that field are losing their jobs right now, but then again, so are people in a lot of other fields.
And who has ever been able to accurately predict the job market? Even those who make such predictions for a living don't always get it right. Most of us will have to work for 30 or 40 years before we get to retire, so why try to follow a trend that's going to die out in 5?
Just remember not to worry too much about following a dream or a passion. :) We're smart people, and we can roll with the punches if we need to.
Half an hour until class. Yeee. :p
