Shooting roller derby is challenging, as I expected, but also pretty damned awesome. As with other types of sports or fast-paced events, it took me a little bit to figure out a method that would work well for me--and my auto-focus wasn't performing as quickly as I'd have liked, but eh, what can you do--but I got at least a few pretty excellent shots. Woo!

Also, Scald Eagle is a ridiculously skilled jammer, and also quite possibly the most photogenic derby player ever. I think at least half of my favorite shots from last night involve her being awesome. One of them is below:

I also had a pretty fantastic time at open scrimmage yesterday, and other than my endurance being sub-par after having been sick, I actually kicked a few asses. AND I stayed for the final hour when the scrimmage switches from women-only to co-ed. From what I could tell, the strategy of male derby players basically boils down to, "hit stuff and see what happens," rather than maintaining walls or positional blocking or anything like that. We'd talk about using wall strategies in the next jam before going out onto the track, but they rarely actually worked.

The only down side was landing on my knee in a not-terribly-fun way. It's stiff and achy today... just in time for my first endurance practice tonight. Figures. ;p

Anyway, there's work to be done, so I'll be doing it  now.
