Video Game Meme: Day 1
Dec. 1st, 2010 12:32 pmWith the way this week has gone, I'm not even sure I'll make it to Day 2. I might just do the days that appeal to me, or I might not have time for anything. Bluuuuugh. But anyway, here goes:
Day 1 - Very first video game.
My memories are most definitely fuzzy. My dad was always pretty keen on technology, so I was learning BASIC at the tender age of... 4 or 5? A lot of that inherited techie fixation centered around computers, but in my very early years, I do believe we had one of these at our house:

And that resulted in my pudgy, little-kid hands attempting to play a hell of a lot of this:

Yes, Pac Man was something my developing brain could actually grasp, so I made more than a few attempts to camp out in my parents' bedroom, and steer that little yellow bastard around the screen. I think Ma had it in her head that I was too young to be playing with such an advanced piece of equipment, so I didn't get as much playtime as I wanted, but oh, did I ever try.
We eventually got a later model of Atari, so I got to play the updated Pac Man, and a couple of other games that I'm not easily recalling. But, after that, I didn't have my own console system, until the Sega Genesis I got when I was 10 or 11.
So, a lot of my video game exploits before the age of 10 took place on the computer, with more well-known titles, and school-sanctioned educational games like Oregon Trail, or various versions of Carmen Sandiego. I did also beat the hell out of Super Mario Bros., thanks to my next door neighbor's NES.
But, I also distinctly remember playing these on our home computer:

These were games my dad had bought for himself, so I think I only somewhat grasped the strategy involved in their various scenarios, at the time. But, good luck keeping my hands off of them. ;)
