Okay, so, I have to weigh in on the most recent PETA thing. I've already long held the opinion that PETA is run by insensitive, hateful morons, but this whole "Save The Whales" thing? Oh my LORD. phrassie pointed to this video from CNN, and god, I thought my eyes would roll so far back into my head they'd come right around front again.

(I have to note this as an aside: I do find it rather ridiculous that the Fat! So? repeatedly refers to "the Fat Community." I get that there's a lot of hate towards fat people, having once been one, but does there really need to be a "Community" for people with larger bodies? Isn't that just painting an even larger target on your own head?)

The hateful attitude towards overweight people is really, really infuriating to me. Fat people are shunned and made fun of, and somehow that remains socially acceptable. It's filled with generalizations like, "fat people are lazy," or, "fat people have no self-control." Overweight people are automatically deemed uglier than skinny people, and people still believe that overweight people can't possibly be healthy or physically fit.

Why does PETA need to shut up? Well, in this instance, because being fat has nothing to do with eating animal products. Yes, animal products contain fat, but dietary fat is not the problem. I've met plenty of people who are vegetarian or vegan, and they do a pretty stellar job of staying fat. There are all kinds of cookies, cakes, and other sugar-laden garbage that is vegan, and those things will still ruin your health!

Meat isn't making us fat. Cheese isn't making us fat. THIS ENTIRE CULTURE is making us fat. Refined and processed food is everywhere, it's cleverly hidden in our so-called "foods" in the name of making money, and it's basically government-sanctioned. (just ask the corn industry) We short ourselves on sleep, we peak and crash constantly on stress, we work ourselves to the bone, and we fill up on drugs we don't need. And then we sit on our asses and put processed junk into our bodies.

AND, we create this constant feeling of inadequacy and fear about our appearances. People put themselves on idiotic diets, take dangerous supplements, and kill themselves in the gym, because they're so terrified of getting fat, or staying fat. And why wouldn't they be? We put such a massive stigma on being fat, and preach the belief that being fat makes you a horrible person, and of COURSE nobody wants to deal with that.

I wish these idiot talking heads would actually learn something about health and nutrition, before talking out their asses about how fat people have no self control.

I loved working with these girls on Sunday; they were both great movers and good people. The girl in the second one even baked us some amaaaaazing gluten-free peanut butter cookies! I had to touch these up super-quick so the designer could send them off to Boston, but I like a LOT of the images from this shoot.

In other news, I can't decide if I want to do swimming or yoga tonight. I already biked to work, and yoga sounds really nice, but so does hitting the water. Of course, now I realize the only thing I have to swim in is a 2-piece, which isn't exactly my #1 choice for lap swimming. :p

Anyhoo, I'm off like a dirty shirt.

AMEN OMG SERIOUSLY. It makes me mad that it's ok to make fun of bigger people, especially on things like Conan and Letterman. God help the women in hollywood who aren't a size two (Kirstie Alley, the lady who used to be on the View, etc) because whenever your name is brought up, it will be in association with your weight.
Then, the absolute best part is when the same people make fun of skinny people, like Lara Flynn Boyle and the 90210 cast. Not to mention how other women refer to larger women as "real women" as if a predisposition to a smaller frame strips you of what makes you a woman. :pttthhhtbt.

Also, my ex went vegan, because he was eating too unhealthy, and gained 60 pounds because as soon as he went vegan, he would just eat whatever the hell he wanted as long as it was cruelty free.

I think Peta is trying to appeal to peoples vanity by suggesting if you stop eating meat or become totally vegan you'll loose 'the weight' like somehow meat is the key to staying fat... True or not, that would be my guess...

I heard from someone that claimed to have worked with PETA that they're a very sexist organization. I never thought about it before then, but then I realized whose nudity it is that they regularly sacrifice for the sake of the manimals. Err, animals.

Hope you don't mind some amateur critique...

I like the strong contrast in the second one, it gives the photo a lot of "pop". I wonder if the highlights might be a little blown out, though.

The lighting in the third one is weird. The way the models are lit, they don't seem to match the background at all.. which makes it look like it's a studio shot in front of a very detailed backdrop (or worse yet: the background's Photoshopped in). I admit this shows off the clothes better than more natural lighting might have done, and perhaps that's the whole point, but the effect is distracting.

The first one doesn't do much for me as an artistic work, but it avoids the problems I see in the other two.

Something about the colors gives these photos the "vintage" look you're fond of. Did you do that deliberately in post?

Yeah, I think I should have re-metered a bit more often; I do like the balance of strobe-to-sunlight in the first one the best. (I really need to bring an assistant more often to these things; making small adjustments every few minutes is good for the light, but me having to walk over and do it myself really disrupts the flow and is generally a pain in the ass. ;p)

And yeah, #1 is not my favorite compositionally, either, but she looked the least like an amputee in that one, so I had to roll with it for the designer's sake. For some reason she hid her back arm a lot while we shot this outfit, whereas her posing in the other dresses was better.
