Lesson learned: nothing makes you appreciate the power of opposable thumbs like not having the use of one of them.

Before anyone wigs out, yes, I do still HAVE my thumb, and it'll be fine and normal. I just can't do much with it at the moment.

Anyhoo, last night, I managed to get a nasty gash on the webbing between by thumb and index finger on my left hand. I wish I could say that I got sneak-attacked by ninjas from an international spy organization, but in reality, I sliced it open on a chipped mason jar rim. Yeah, talk about awesome. ;p

I was ready to just slap a band-aid on it and walk it off, but then Ben came and looked at it and declared that I needed stitches, so we made our way out to the closest Urgent Care (which, being near I-205, wasn't exactly "close").

Serafin came and waited with us, and there was a lot of waiting around, filling out of forms, and snarfing down Clif Bars because we hadn't had dinner yet. The last time I'd had stitches was when I was a kid and got 8 of them in my knee, and I didn't exactly have pleasant memories of *that* experience, so I was really hoping they'd just glue the cut shut and call it a day.

I did wind up needing stitches, though, so I emerged from the urgent care center two hours later, with two stitches and my hand covered in iodine and gauze, but otherwise none the worse for wear. I don't have much range of motion on my thumb right now, because it tugs on the stitches and stings like a mofo if I try to grab anything bigger than a pencil. I do get the stitches out in a week, though, so I *should* be ok for doing long fist and southern at Berkeley.

So, yeah, it could be worse. But, it does make some of the most absurdly simple things rather difficult. Like putting on pants.

You get used to it believe it or not. My right thumb was crippled in an accident about 10 years ago (and yes, I am right handed). I just learned to use my index finger as a substitute thumb.

Oh and I am glad you weren;t seriously hurt (besides needing the stitches and everything).

Hope you make a speedy recovery.

Get well soon. And when I'm not sick, I want to see you and Ben. And Seraphim.

You know, the ninja masters used to cut their thumb webs deliberately in order to give their thumbs a greater range of motion. Only then could they perform the intricate hand and finger positions needed to work the greatest of all ninja magics.

I don't suppose wushu teaches you any ninja magic, considering the Chinese would have frowned on that sort of thing.

Boo :(
