Virginia Tech
Apr. 19th, 2007 10:09 amYeah, I know, everybody has something to say about the Virginia Tech shootings. I'd originally decided to keep my thoughts to myself, because, well, a lot of people have already said, and probably said it better than my coding-addled brain could right now. It's terrible that it happened, and it saddens me to hear about the circumstances.
What really steams me is not merely that the incident happened, however. It's the fact that, here in the aftermath, the media and the public somehow thinks it's okay to use this tragedy as a platform for pimping their own agenda.
Observe:
What is wrong with the citizens of this country? This kind of behavior is in such poor taste that I can hardly believe it, but there it is, happening every hour. I don't understand how any thinking human being could decide that these kinds of actions are acceptable or even remotely considerate.
Innocent people DIED. They had their lives taken away from them before their time. The families and friends of those people are trying to grieve and cope, while greedy politicians, small-time pundits, and religious nutjobs do their best to cheapen those lost lives. Can't they just shut up for 5 seconds and attempt to show even a little respect?
Apparently, judging from the news reports, that's too much to ask.

Observe:
- Some religious folks are attempting to blame the shootings on schools that teach evolution, less than 24 hours after it happened.
- Bill O'Reilly uses the shootings to take a stab at the far-left. When in doubt, blame the people who don't agree with you!
- Even dear old George W wants to take the opportunity to give interviews from campus. Nothing like a good ol' fashioned tragedy to boost a sagging approval rating.
- And, the real kicker: Westboro Baptist Church plans to protest at the memorial service for the people who died.
