I have the worst headache of all time today, and even the coffee didn't fix it. And I will attempt to write almost 3500 words this evening while I watch the election coverage provided by my beloved Jon Stewart (who is Not Your Monkey) and his merry band of fake newspeople. This is because I didn't Nano at all yesterday. I sincerely hope that I don't wind up being too busy for this, but it may very well happen with all the wushu and gym time. I'm not allowed to have more than one big goal at a time, it seems.

In other news, today's the big day. And no, I'm not going to tell you to vote with a message in big block letters. At least 50% of the posts on your Friends Page are probably already doing that, after all, and I trust that you're all responsible, educated ladies and gents who know that it's important to vote, so I won't preach to you about it.

And by the time many of you see this post, you'll have already done it. It doesn't really bear repeating. *Especially* if you live in a swing state, and are therefore in the same unfortunate group as I am, that group being the group that has been receiving numerous calls from political groups on a daily basis.

So yeah, don't prove me wrong by missing out on this election. Because if you do, then YOU are partly to blame for my phone ringing off the hook with political calls and pushing me to the brink of insanity! And you know, maybe if enough of us 20-somethings vote this time around, we won't be so constantly harassed about it in 2008. Doesn't that sound nice?

Anyway, so at least some of you don't leave with a cloud of cranky hanging over your head, here's a funny article. Well, assuming you aren't a Bush voter. Why? Example: "It is just the sort of Americans who know they are neither clever nor good-looking who will vote for Bush." Obviously not entirely true--and I say this primarily out of respect for my parents and [livejournal.com profile] polysciguy, all of whom are neither dumb nor ugly :)--but still, hee.

Also: early voting is The Awesome. Every state should do it! I feel bad for everyone who has to stand in some crazy line just do something as simple as voting.

Anyway, it's time to finish my lunch, so I'm off.

I don't think it's the 18-25-year-olds in college who aren't voting. It's the 18-25-year-old workers. Why don't they go canvas McDonald's and Jiffy Lube? That way they would get less politically active teens and twenty-somethings to vote.

Yeah, seriously. College seems to bring out the political wacko in all of us, because lord knows I didn't give a flying crap about most of this stuff in high school. :p

You're preaching to the choir! Dear lord I thought this would get me off my ass to finally start my next story. *kicks self* Day two and I still haven't written.

The electoral college, in its infinite wisdom, has decided my vote for me.

The electoral college doesn't vote for you, they count the votes in the state. Which ever candidate wins in the state that's who the electoral vote goes to.

Actually, surprisingly, only one person on my friends list told me I should vote.

I think this clearly means one of two things.

Either:
A) I do not have enough friends.
or
B) My friends are irresponsible.

(There's also the chance that there is a C and it is that more than half of them didn't even update today)

Yes, they count all the popular votes in the state, and then give all the electoral votes to the winner.. meaning that everyone who voted for someone else might just as well have stayed home, or voted for the winner too. They have, in effect, had their votes decided for them by those who represent them. And in most states, including mine, support is strong enough for one candidate or party to make the popular vote irrelevant.

So, yes, I have involuntarily voted Bush.

This means that only a handful of "swing" or "battleground" states - and Maine, which splits its electoral votes to match the popular vote, or so I'm told - really matter in a presidential election.. which is funny, since that's exactly the sort of thing the electoral college is intended to prevent.
