I always recommend Jesus' Son(by Dennis Johnson) to people. Half the people that read it don't like it, though. Maybe I should stop. But it's hard to when I consider it one of the greatest books I have ever read. EVER. I've read it three times and that's a lot for a guy who has only ever read three books more than once(the others were Nine Stories and Catcher in the Rye, both read twice).
But you like Pahalniuk(spelling?), right? Maybe you'll like it. It's a really dark first-person account of drug addiction, sorta. It's a bunch of short stories about the same character. The sentences are just incredibly beautiful. Like poetry, but into a cohesive story. My ex-girlfriend hates the book though, cause the main character is a dash of reprehensible. But she has bad taste so don't listen to her.

But if that's sounding not cool at all to you, I highly recommend Atonement by Ian McEwan. It was just recently released on paperback and McEwan is pretty close to the greatest living writer. And I'm not the only one who thinks so. They gave him the Booker(whatever that is, I think it's pretty prestigious) for it.

And if you're one of the few people under 30 who hasn't read A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, I'd say it is damn fine despite its hipster reputation.
