Since [livejournal.com profile] starkodama was talking about it, I'm having the thought of giving up something for Lent. I'm obviously not Catholic, but I've never done it before, so it could be an interesting experience.

I'll probably give up Junk Food, even though I've been a lot better about junk food in recent months. The only other thing I can think of is giving up the Computer, but I really can't do that, because then I'll run out of money and starve, and I'll have some very angry clients on my hands. :)

Do *you* have any ideas for what I should give up for Lent? Suggest!

I am definitely buying tickets to HMS Pinafore. Wheeee! Especially since the Pixies are already sold out for my birthday. GRRR! Somebody obviously needs to just give it up, and hand over the Pixies tickets that are rightfully mine! :p

Anyway, I'm off to take care of the first item on today's very short To-Do List. :)

I give up the same thing every year for lent: Christianity. I haven't cheated yet! =D

I think James is by far the more addicted one! Between preparing for Collegiates and leaving town for 3 days, I've hardly played is at all :)

ah, but that would mean i was following lent properly, and then fucking up my giving-up. ;)

i dunno, basically I always thought lent was dumb, from watching my Catholic friends go through the SAME DAMN CYCLE every year. They give up chocolate, whine EVERY DAY about not being able to eat chocolate, bitch and bitch and BITCH about it, and then on easter they make themselves throw up eating 20 pounds of Gertrude Hawke or whatever the hell that one brand is that Judy would orgasm over every Easter. I'm not quite sure what exactly that was supposed to teach or impress upon anyone. I know sacrifice is supposed to be a good thing and all, but I don't really see what giving up something you love for a set amount of time really does, other than drive you nuts. Cutting down for an indefinite/permanent amount of time for health/money/sanity reasons, I get, but lent just goes over my head. but then, most religious holidays other than Purim do. ^^;

OMG that's so witty~.. but it doesn't work because you were never Catholic in the first place, so you're not actually giving it up for Lent.

I think it's a good idea to give stuff up every now and again, it teaches you to appreciate what you've got. But I can certainly understand how it's not for everyone.

Anyway, I think giving up junk food's a great idea! Lent's neat because it gives you a real good excuse to quit something you shouldn't be doing anyway.

Wow, I see you've gotten more and more friendly since you and I have parted ways, but since the last thing I want to do is start shit in Sarah's journal, I'll move on.

I already said in my reply to Sarah why I see no point to lent - all of my Catholic friends just seem to turn it into a fast/fast/fast/BINGE!!! yearly cycle on the things they give up.Nothing learned, nothing gained. Sure, that's probably not the same story for everyone, but I just simply don't see a point. If you're really that in need/determined to quit something, you can quit it for real, holiday or not, I would think. I'm pretty much against giving up things like junk food/sweets for any periods because I think that just causes more trouble than, say, cutting down gradually. But hey, if that's your thing, knock yourself out.

I am definitely buying tickets to HMS Pinafore...

PICARD
Do you know Gilbert and Sullivan?

WORF
No, sir. I haven't had a chance to
meet all the new crew members
since I've been back...

PICARD
They're composers, Worf, from the
nineteenth century. Data was
rehearsing a part in H.M.S.
Pinafore before he left...
(singing)
"A British tar is a soaring soul,
As free as a mountain bird, His
energetic first should be ready to
resist A dictatorial word..."

Hee hee hee...

Well, it's no secret that Lent is tough. But Sarah's already said that she wants to give it a shot. Why are you discouraging her?

I think it also couldn't hurt to be a little more tolerant of others' beliefs. I know that tact and sublety have never been your forte, but it's a good thing to cultivate, I think. :/ But I'm done. I've said my piece and I'm out. Sorry Sarah.

I'm not discouraging her. I made a joke, as you could proably tell from reading her response, it didn't bother her - we've been friends for at least 6 years, I think you're misreading this whole thing. But whatever.

And yes, I'm intolerant. That's why I have Catholic friends. That's why I went to church with them when they asked me, and why I've celebrated Jewish holidays with my friend and her family. That's why I sat seiza with prayer beads in my hands as a Buddhist priest chanted rites for my Okaasan's dead parents on the anniversary of their death. Whiskey, tango, foxtrot? I guess I can see how someone would take that one little joke as LOLOLOL CHRISTIANS R DUM LOLOLOLOLOL ATHEIZM IZ KEWL, but you're off a bit. No matter.

Wow, tact and subtlety..how about when you figure them out, you drop me a line and let me know how you managed to develop them? Until then, I offer you a deal: leave me alone and I'll do the same for you. I think it's obvious we're both much happier that way. :) Ok, that's it...not gonna clog up a friend's journal with this shit anymore (no, really, I mean it this time). Goodbye.

Ah, see, Lent is dieting with an explicitly religious excuse. You know, as opposed to the implicitly religious, cultish one of most popular diets. Therefore, they have to fill in the gaps, because chances are they've lost the initial religious fervor years ago if they're lenting. If they were dieting, they'd still be fervourish.

Well, yeah, it seems silly to sit there and complain about it the whole time. I mean, I wouldn't expect anyone to be *happy* about giving up their favorite thing, but they should at least try to suck it up a little. :p

I just figure, hey, it's a viable excuse to quit doing something that I probably shouldn't be doing anyway! And after all the donuts and drive-thru of last weekend, the first week should be *easy*.

LOL, I either think of that or:

Sideshow Bob: "...any last requests?"
Bart: "I'd like you to sing the entire score of the HMS Pinafore."
Sideshow Bob: "Very well, Bart. I shall send you to Heaven... before I send you to Hell!"

they were wussy catholics, my friends. *laughs*

yeah, when you overdo it it's easy to cut it out. i mean, hey, i wish ya luck on it. :)

...although the mention of donuts is making ME really hungry. ;_;
